Since 1995, the number of new nonmedical users of OxyContin has risen by 700,000 individuals. This statistic was recently published by SAMHSA in "Overview of Findings From the 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health" (Department of Health and Human Services, September 2005). Abuse of all types of painkillers has been steadily rising. Findings show that young adults, in particular, are abusing opiates in the pill form. About one forth of young adults have taken a painkiller for a nonmedical reason. The pill form of these narcotic drugs makes them easier to administer than injectible opiates such as heroin. The likelihood of addiction, however, is just as powerful with these swallowable painkillers. As ease of use and accessibility to these narcotics increase, numbers will most likely rise. The nature of dependence on these drugs is extremely dangerous, and treating the addiction is a long, intensive process. Detoxification alone from painkillers is an agonizing experience.
